Pretzels were originally created by monks in the early Middle Ages as a reward for children who learned their prayers.

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. Add melted butter and warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda.
  7. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a rope. Shape the ropes into pretzels.
  8. Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling water mixture for about 30 seconds, then remove using a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Sprinkle coarse sugar on top of each pretzel.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  11. Allow the pretzels to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
