  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough into two equal portions and shape each into a disc. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out one portion of the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch (6 mm) thickness.
  8. Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes, and transfer them to the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Use a smaller cookie cutter or a knife to cut out the centers of each cookie.
  10. Crush the hard candy into small pieces and fill the cut-out centers of the cookies with the crushed candy.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  12. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
