  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and molasses.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until well combined.
  4. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls, then roll each ball in the remaining 1/3 cup of granulated sugar.
  5. Place the sugar-coated dough balls onto a baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the tops are cracked.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
