Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, combine flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add molasses, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix well.

Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with hot water. Mix until well combined.

Grease and flour a 9x9 inch baking pan. Pour the batter into the pan and spread evenly.

Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the gingerbread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once cooled, dust the gingerbread with powdered sugar. Cut into squares and serve.
