  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add the melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, ground cardamom, salt, and remaining sugar to the yeast mixture. Mix well.
  3. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough and knead in the raisins and sliced almonds.
  7. Divide the dough into two equal portions and shape each portion into a braided loaf.
  8. Place the loaves on a greased baking sheet and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  10. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and milk. Brush the mixture over the risen loaves.
  11. Bake the loaves for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Remove from the oven and let the bread cool on a wire rack before serving.
