In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.

Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture and mix well.

Divide dough into 2 equal portions, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness.

Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters.

Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly golden brown.
