The first chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938. She added chopped up bits from a Nestle semi-sweet chocolate bar into a cookie recipe, expecting the chocolate to melt and spread throughout the dough. However, the chocolate bits remained intact, creating the very first chocolate chip cookie!

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a small bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the vanilla extract and eggs, one at a time, until well combined.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Stir in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and chopped walnuts (optional).

Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto ungreased baking sheets.

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 2 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
