The first chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938 when she ran out of baker’s chocolate and used chopped-up semi-sweet chocolate instead, expecting it to melt and mix into the dough. The result was the iconic chocolate chip cookie we know today!

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
