  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  4. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture alternately with the applesauce, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely.
