In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, sauté until fragrant.

Add broccoli florets and bring the soup to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes or until the broccoli is tender.

Once the broccoli is cooked, use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth. Alternatively, transfer the soup to a blender and blend until smooth.
