In a mixing bowl, combine the creamy peanut butter, unsalted butter, vanilla extract, powdered sugar, and salt. Mix until well combined.

Roll the mixture into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator and let the buckeyes chill for about 1 hour, or until firm.

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips and vegetable shortening together, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth.

Using a toothpick or skewer, dip each peanut butter ball into the melted chocolate, leaving a small portion uncovered to resemble a buckeye nut.

Place the dipped buckeyes back on the baking sheet and refrigerate until the chocolate is set.
