Banana bread became popular during the Great Depression as a way to use overripe bananas, which were often discarded.

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a loaf pan.

In a large bowl, mash the bananas until smooth. Add the melted butter, sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and milk. Mix well.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture, stirring until just combined. Fold in the chopped walnuts, if desired.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 55-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
