In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.

Arrange the bread slices in the prepared baking dish, overlapping slightly. Sprinkle the raisins evenly over the bread.

Pour the milk mixture over the bread, pressing down gently to make sure all the bread is soaked. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
