The first chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938 when she ran out of baker’s chocolate and substituted it with chopped up semi-sweet chocolate, expecting it to melt and create chocolate cookies. Instead, the chocolate chips held their shape and the chocolate chip cookie was born!

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  6. Spread the cookie dough evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cookie bars to cool in the pan for 30 minutes before cutting into squares.
