Hermit bar cookies are believed to have originated in New England in the 19th century. They were traditionally made with molasses and spices, and were a popular treat among sailors.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the raisins and chopped walnuts.

Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
