In a bowl, combine the dates and boiling water. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
-
In a separate bowl, whisk together the baking soda and melted butter.
-
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract. Gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt.
-
Pour the date mixture into the batter and mix well.
-
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
-
Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

While the pudding is baking, make the toffee sauce. In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream, dark brown sugar, unsalted butter, and vanilla extract. Heat over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and the sauce has thickened.
-
Once the pudding is baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes.

Pierce the pudding all over with a skewer and pour half of the toffee sauce over the top. Allow it to soak for 5 minutes.
-
Serve the sticky toffee pudding warm with the remaining toffee sauce drizzled on top.
